What does it mean for an artwork to be made by @xcopy.eth? Take NGMI, for example, which was auctioned at Sothebys. The artwork was actually minted by XCOPY, but OpenSea considers an unknown wallet—the deployer of the contract—as the creator. This brings us to an important question: is the creator the deployer or the minter? Well, it depends; sometimes it's neither.

For digital provenance to be truly transparent, everyone—auction houses, artists, collectors—needs to be upfront about their wallets and bring transparency into monetary transactions. The space needs transparency to link NFT transfers with payment records. Right now, we often can’t definitively connect the dots, which complicates authenticity.

We tend to believe that blockchain = transparent provenance, but is it, really? When buying digital art, do you fully understand what you’re getting? Are smart contracts clear and easy to navigate for you?

If an artwork’s history is well-documented, it can be worth more. Collectors prefer to buy art when they can be sure of its history. But the importance of understanding and managing provenance goes even deeper: it’s about protecting an artist's creative identity and making sure their impact is recognized.

For trad art, you can often trace provenance through things like sales receipts, gallery records, or entries in catalogues raisonnés. For digital artists, provenance takes on a new role due to the nature of digital works: - authentication - value - ownership - legacy & reputation More on that later 👀

Provenance shows the history of an artwork: who owned it before, where it's been shown, and details about any times it was sold/auctioned. Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa illustrates this well, having been owned by French kings and stolen in the 20th century, each event adding layers to its story, mystique, and value.
