Oh, I told my managers I didn’t understand what they wanted me to do. Because I would get rewarded only if I did what they wanted without telling me. So deviation was penalised even when it led to better results. But asking for instructions was also penalised, because I was reliant on them.

So time and time again, it was the same story: managers that wanted to not give instructions, but also not take accountability. I very very much doubt my experience was special.

Just to be clear with other folks reading this: I am confident I had a normal, and even good leadership experience by many standards. Just not proper for the networked world many of us live in today

And if you followed instructions without them telling you, and you got a bad outcome, then it was your fault
