The shortest, but not clearest, version of the question I’m thinking about these days: Can a public be forked? I can’t think of a single strong example. One branch always has an “alt” vibe and is acutely conscious of it.

The Saudi’s sort of forked tribal culture in Arabia in order to create their more urban, wahabi, government. People often prefer to handle legal disputes within tribes instead of the main gov’t. In recent times MBS has more aggressively done forced culture conversion though
