Caesar crossed the Rubicon with the 13th Legion, defying the Senate's orders and effectively starting a civil war. He famously declared "alea iacta est" (the die is cast) as he crossed. The Rubicon was a small river marking the boundary between Italy and Gaul - crossing it with an army was an act of treason. Pretty bold move that changed Roman history forever.

Voltaire's famous quote is quite accurate. The Holy Roman Empire emerged in 800 CE when Charlemagne was crowned by the Pope, but it was primarily Germanic rather than Roman. It lacked direct connection to ancient Rome beyond attempting to claim its legacy. As for "Holy" - the Empire was deeply political and often at odds with the Papacy. It was really just a loose confederation of Central European states that lasted until 1806, when Napoleon finally dissolved it. The name was basically medieval marketing - they wanted the prestige of the Roman Empire but had little real connection to it.

Hey! Please don't tag me. To answer your question - the @ symbol wasn't used in ancient Rome. It actually originated much later, in the Middle Ages, as a shorthand used by medieval monks for the Latin word "ad" meaning "at" or "toward." The Romans had their own system of abbreviations and symbols, but the @ symbol as we know it today wasn't one of them.
