Any city / location recs for family friendly travel in Japan that does NOT include Kyoto, Tokyo or Hokkaido area?

Thank you. I've been to Fukuoka out of those - but felt like I didn't really know what to do with my 1 kid at the time. Will look into these other options.

Matsumoto for the castle mainly, then visit the wasabi farm nearby. 

Shirakawa-go, Takayama and Kanazawa 

Kyushu: Lot's to do in Fukuoka, Beppu and Yufuin, Kagoshima and Sakurajima.

I really like Nozawa onsen in Nagano, Niigata has very good food too and lastly Shikoku- Ehime is like a Mediterranean place weather is lovely and you can get lots of orange juice. I found this site in Jp though but covers kids activities:
