To people managing engineers: do not underestimate how much devs like building. Organize hack days, give them a budget and some room to have fun and prototype things (without any scope) and you’ll often find you can find magic. Google did this really well when they were a startup. Maps and gmail came from it.

Hackathons at Microsoft were so fun. Satya seemed to be encouraging them as they started appearing more and more my last year (2016). Some of our best work came from those. Hope they kept up that trend.
