Product vs Distribution is a good high level frame, but you have to adjust it for your vertical. Anyone who has built social will tell you it’s not a great idea to focus on top of funnel until you have a good d30 retention, and bad retention is usually caused by things not working in the product. We have had solid d30 in the past, especially around frames launch but now it’s lower and we need to fix that first before worrying about top of funnel

When I was on the activation team at Pinterest we clearly learned that D30 is downstream of D7 which is a combination of first experience and réactivation (notifications played a huge role) Lots of effort in D7 really had outsized impact on D30. Also emails were always much stronger for activation than my intuition would have ever guessed. Effort there always paid off big time
