Today I was on the subway and saw a person walk in who looked very homeless: Torn shirt, unkempt dirty hair, and sneakers so damaged that his bare feet were exposed. He held a medium-sized black bag, and, after he boarded, stood in the center of the car and began to unzip it. To the surprise of everyone, this gentleman, who looked like any of the thousands of homeless New Yorkers that we generally ignore or avoid while going about our lives, pulled out a violin and began playing it for the car. Whatever his appearance may have suggested, he was clearly well-trained on the instrument. He played a very crisp sonata for the duration of the ride. Many of the riders, now, suddenly paying him rapt attention, were clearly moved. When he was done, some kids politely clapped. After collecting a few dollars, the man gathered himself and departed at the next stop – dissolving back into an anonymous sea of people, where no one would know his hidden talent, or the backstory that led him here.
