Day 142: On the Wind and the Sun The Wind and the Sun were disputing over which was the stronger. Suddenly they saw a traveler coming down the road, and the Sun said: “I see a way to decide our dispute. Whichever of us can cause that traveler to take off his cloak shall be regarded as the stronger. You begin.” The Sun rested behind a cloud and the Wind began to blow as hard as he could upon the traveler. But the harder he blew, the more tightly the traveler wrapped his cloak around himself. So the Wind blew even harder. But the traveler only held onto his cloak more stubbornly. Eventually, the Wind gave up in anger and frustration.

Now it was the Sun's turn. The Sun came out and began to shine. At first his rays were gentle, and in the pleasant warmth after the bitter cold of the Wind, the traveler unfastened his cloak and let it hang loosely from his shoulder. The Sun shone brighter and brighter, and its rays grew warmer and warmer. Soon the traveler felt so hot that he took of his cloak and sat down by the shade of a nearby tree. The Sun looked at the Wind and smiled. The Sun was declared the winner.
