i think they made the change to work towards creating cozy corners/close knit communities. lots of bigger channels had too much spam and moderation was a pain.

most channel owners who don’t want their channel to be exclusive are casting the invite link publicly or sharing a request to join frame by cura @openrank

It's probably a bad idea to share channel invite links in public. Spambots will begin the "finding out" phase soon.
