I take issue with lifelong meditation practices like monasticism. They are a subtle form of solipsism. Sure, you can manufacture happiness by sitting still your entire life. But you will *not* make the world a better place, nor will you contribute any new knowledge to society.

To me, meditation is not about retreating from life but about responsibly preparing to meet it with greater care and effectiveness.

hmm, that's historically false. Monks were instrumental in the way western civilization rose back from middle ages to the level of classical ancient Greece culture and beyond.
