Recognized as a self-portrait of the Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. Leonardo is thought to have painted this self-portrait when he was about 60 years old. It depicts the head of an elderly man in a three-quarter turn, with his face turned towards the viewer. The sitter's characteristic features are long hair and a long, wavy beard. The length of the hair and beard is unusual for Renaissance portraits. The face has a slightly aquiline nose and is marked by deep wrinkles. The man has probably lost his upper front teeth. The eyes look forward from under thick eyebrows. The drawing is done with his left hand, as was customary for Leonardo. There are other portraits of Leonardo, painted by himself and by other artists. The profile portrait is attributed to his pupil and professional assistant Francesco Melzi, who remained with Leonardo until his death, travelling and working with him in Milan, Rome and France.
