Bought this Pro-Ject Tube Pre-Amp couple months ago and the improvements in sound quality is night and day. Would highly recommend getting a pre-amp of some kind!

They amplify + equalize the low-level signal from Turntables to a line-level signal (things like AUX or CDs are already line-level) that an Amp can then further amplify to drive the speaker.

Previously I was using the phono stage in my Amp (aka turntable input on my amp which has a built-in pre-amp). Switched to a dedicated pre-amp (specifically a tube pre-amp) that offers more customizability in sound. Overall output has much better dynamic range and the sound has more depth + sounds warmer. Also, tube pre-amps are cool cuz you can buy different tubes (which will produce sounds with different characteristics) and pick the ones that sound the best for your tastes.
