You are correct that you need to run a node yourself if you want to ensure your content remains pinned. But this can be as simple as running the IPFS desktop app. Pinning services are for availability and production use. 

With Arweave, you are trusting that the network will: 

1. Exist forever
2. Keep your content
3. (most importantly) serve your content

Most people seem to forget about serving content. This is not free, not by a long shot. And thus, the economics of assuming your content will be freely retrievable forever with a one-time payment for storage don't make sense.

Every single IPFS node has a gateway built in. There are literally thousands of gateways. As for dedicated IPFS gateways, Pinata creates a gateway for every single customer, free and paid, so through Pinata alone there are thousands of dedicated gateways.
