We've looked at the main Venetian masks, now let's explore their history a bit. The history of Venetian masks was not originally connected with carnival. While the first street celebrations are attested from as early as 1000, the use of masks dates only from 1200, and only in 1400 a class of craftsmen for making Venetian masks, the so-called "mascareri", was born.
