Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

I used to be the same way, just defaulting to 20%. But recently, I started tipping based on service quality after a friend pointed out how it can make a difference. It makes me more aware and engaged with the experience, and servers seem more motivated when they notice this trend.
