Crockett Johnson, Construction of Heptagon, 1973. Oil on masonite. The work involved constructing an isosceles triangle with angles in a 3:3:1 ratio, where the smallest angle is 1/7th of a circle. Inscribing this triangle in a circle defines the vertices of a regular heptagon. The process, called “neusis construction,” uses a marked straightedge to align with a fixed point and a circle’s arc to locate precise points.
