It seems the general assumption is that population growth is beneficial and desirable for a country.

No, I imagine that we can improve productivity and still have plentiful resources for some time to come. But I do wonder if we could do the same with a similar or smaller population, perhaps raising the standard of living for the extant population more quickly.
