It’s completely wild to me, and so idiosyncratically American, that people even think of “races” among humans. If you went to Europe and asked people what “race” they belong to, they would look at you like you just landed from another planet. The concept doesn’t make sense biologically speaking. There are neither races nor sub-species within Homo sapiens. The genetic diversity among humans is not only superficial, it’s clinal — meaning that it changes gradually over geographic space rather than forming distinct boundaries. In fact, genetic differences within two random people sampled within any given population / ethnicity are *greater* than between the average of those two populations. (Maybe that’s what the article argues — I haven’t read it). I understand the historical context as to why Americans started making that racial distinction (Native Americans, then slaves) — but in the 21st century this notion needs to die.

A more reasonable question would be about ethnicity or ancestry, and only for its cultural implications.
