College is helpful for career if:

1. You major in something with hard skills
2. In the US, you got to a school that gives you an initial professional network

But after your first or second job, most places just care about what you've done at the previous job (or built on your own).

While working in Food Safety and Quality for 5 years, I gained more skills and credentials on the job than I did in college. After outgrowing my position and interviewing elsewhere for positions I was overqualified for I was told I couldn’t be hired because I don’t have a college degree.
