"Ichiyo Raifuku" means "fortune comes after hardship," with the crucial moment being exactly midnight (00:00) between December 31st and January 1st. Following tradition, the charm should be enshrined facing the year's lucky direction, which is 255 degrees West according to the chart and my iPhone. It’s now safely on a high wall after traveling over 8,000 miles and went up exactly as the clock struck midnight.

A few people have asked me how I got the special charms 8,000 miles without damaging them….
