Today would have been a good day to go to the hot springs (onsen) but I chose to go horseback riding. And instead it snowed. So the horses got to enjoy frolicking on the snowy plains and I got to watch them from the restaurant where I ate horse sashimi instead. Touché mfers. Touché.

I slather sonbayu on my skin and eat all the delicious horse. What always surprises me is that it’s really really hard to find Japanese horse horse oil. Most of it’s imported from Germany because they eat more horse meat!  I usually only find domestic horse oil in Hokkaido!!!

It’s like finding whale products in 2025. 2005 was different. I still think they are around but more on the down low. I find German horse oil in almost every drug/beauty store.

It’s extremely similar to our own sebum so it’s a fantastic hydration and final step for skincare as an occlusive before you sleep. It penetrates very deeply into our skin. And a small jar lasts for months so it’s very inexpensive compared to other creams!

Slugging is life. Basically, you want your final layer to be like a slug. Almost slimy and gooey. Some people use petroleum jelly or very fancy Korean sleeping masks.  This one is at every major store like Matsumoto Kiyoshi. The liquid is harder to find. I use it in my hair too. The jar is much easier to find but it smells more (but dissipates quickly). One jar easily lasts me 3-4 months because you only need a small amount! The liquid oil lasts me a year but probably because I alternate with the Fino hair oil ;)
