You can make actually free NFTs using counterfactual mint permissions with the new gator.metamask.io

my issue isn't that most NFTs come at a small cost - it's more that i get annoyed with the positioning when people/brands say a mint is free when it's not but that's cool, i hadn't heard about this new toolkit!

Yeah, and I think that's a legit concern. I think it's pretty gross to the average person to be told "this is free... just buy my favorite chain's coin first". The delegation toolkit would let you defer any gas cost to an eventual buyer/transfer.

I get the impression you're thinking about gas fees, but there's also a trend of claiming a "free mint" then charging a platform fee (which can be as high as 0.001 ETH). Zora has pushed this trend and unfortunately the parlance has gone widespread.

I must have missed it as buried in the gas fee, thanks for clarifying. I suspect there are ways of enabling platforms revenue without burdening new initiates with fees, and I don't think it will be by rebranding fees as free.
