Coming into the final week of @phil's Silicon Valley Canon course, this week on Risk.

AI risk, of course, is top of mind.

I'm in an odd camp here. 

On the one hand, it's not hard for me to imagine the development of superintelligence or that it could, and perhaps is likely to, be catastrophic. I do think this is "the most important century" ala Cold Takes https://www.cold-takes.com/the-most-important-century-in-a-nutshell/

On the other hand, I'm naturally a romantic, an optimist, and a builder. I see both tyranny and stagnation as terrifying existential risks. Technology, in particular AI, is an essential mitigating force.

All considered, I'm placing my bet on humanity's ingenuity, invention, and capacity for grace in navigating unknown territory. To build fast, ambitiously, and thoughtfully.

It's likely irrational. Perhaps even delusional. But it's in my nature to hope and to work to make that hope a reality.
