Working as an editor now, I have less time to read what I like. But I basically read like a maniac from 17 to 27 (I'm 28 now), so a lot of what I'm drawing from is that decade of reading. I treated it like a second full-time job. Why? I don't know, I knew I wanted a life in books, so I thought okay: I don't know how naturally talented I am at writing, but by god I can outwork and outread them. It was kind of like an apprenticeship I put myself through. I didn't know if it would ever work out, but in the last 18 months or so (finally) things have started to come together.
