My son's (idyllic) nursery school in Okinawa is closing after 33 years at the end of the school year. I've been on the hunt for a new once since we heard the news.

Why are they closing?

It's a mix of 1) population decline, 2) a terrible hiring pipeline (record low enrollments for teacher's college), and 3) fixed-cost inflation w/ relative wage stagnation.

Three other schools we've spoken with are also closing within the next couple of years.

Ironically, spots are all full among most of the schools remaining...
