So I've new to the craft, as always a writer and thus an editor only to myself, so I'm still learning the ropes. We're a small outfit at Infinite Books, so we're very selective about what writers we take on, because we really want to spend real, qualitative time on their work. This isn't the case in traditional publishing, which is a bit of a conveyor belt. So, it normally consists of longform conversations with the author first, to really get to the bottom of their ideas and what they're trying to say, and then we move on a developmental draft. This is big-picture editing, focusing on structure, theme, etc. Then, when we're happy with that, we go a level deeper and start editing line-by-line. It's very collaborative, we have weekly calls where we're almost co-writing oftentimes. 0 reply
