Is it that bad downtown? Homelessness, crime, and terror by methhead is an omnipresent issue in Austin. It’s not like downtown is “the bad part of town”. It’s the part of town where you have to confront it most often because you’re in a car. When you’re not in a car you realize the scope. There is more like a thin film of disorder that covers the WHOLE city. Unlike SF where the disorder occurs on the street, and in “the tenderloin” a lot of the homeless in Austin LIVE IN THE WOODS, ALL OVER. Texas doesn’t have a lot of public green space to begin with, and here the trails and greenbelts will have HUGE camps of people. As a nature enjoyer it has been the biggest blackpill to realize I can’t explore these places or to know they are ruined by poop buckets and other things that linger even after the city remediates a site. This map is a community sourced record of all camps. Tell me where the “bad” neighborhood is. Looks like the whole city to me. https://www.nomadik.ai/

This is what happens when housing becomes unaffordable to most. It's pretty much the same phenomenon in every major city.
