Absolutely correct, one theory though is that, at least some of, the metrics are likely the same, so open rank can be used as an indicator 
All speculation though 

I guess the biggest unanswered question atm is whether ‘engagement’ only takes into account reactions to root casts or any and all

I was surprised however to see an open rank dev state that they only count root casts so it piqued my interest
