"American law enforcement officials arrested two top leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the most dominant criminal organizations in Mexico, the Justice Department said on Thursday. The two operatives, Ismael Zambada García and Joaquín Guzmán López, are among the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico, commanding massive cocaine and fentanyl businesses that move narcotics into the United States, Europe and elsewhere." Spending time in Latin America this year and learning about the scope of cartel activities was quite eye-opening. Its a region of the world I knew less about and the growth of powerful sub-state organizations was an interesting and alarming sign of the devolution of political power. The Sinaloa Cartel is among the most powerful and I'm skeptical these arrests will make a huge difference to its operations. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/25/world/americas/mexico-cartel-ismael-zambada-garcia-joaquin-guzman-lopez.html

Unfortunately this will only lead to more violence because it will trigger infighting over leadership in the cartel. The cartels are decentralised so removing one leader will not disturb their operations at all. It’s just a signal from US to leaders of cartel that they can’t be safe.
