Xochimilco Lake, located in Mexico City, is a remarkable remnant of the ancient Lake of Gran Tenochtitlan. Following the arrival of the Spanish colonizers in 1519, they began strategically draining the lake, initially to weaken the Aztecs and later to control flooding and make way for urban development.
