You can reject the nation state without being an individualist (there are alternative approaches to collectivism). I dislike individualism as a worldview though. I think civilisation has a better chance of flourishing if there is social cohesion and a sense of belonging with fellow humans. And studies repeatedly demonstrate that one of the most effective ways to boost your own happiness is to do things for other people. So even if you’re purely self-motivated, contributing to a community is in your self-interest.

I think people get tripped up by the need to have one pure approach or another (only individualism, only collectivism) but we all exercise different strategies in different contexts. We're generally communist with our families, we're capitalist between different nations (even if the nations themselves aren't), etc.

Agreed. That lack of nuance and the urge to put everything into a neatly defined box is widespread. On a broader scale, I actually think everyday people on both the ‘left’ and ‘right’ of the political spectrum have much more in common than they realise. But we insist on labelling (and dehumanising) eachother.
