Let me say, from my own perspective, I see the stuff on the boy’s head as him using his thoughts as defend mechanisms and protection for his mind…and what’s coming out of the mouth…I’m not really sure what that portrays

Well, I intended her to be a girl. Who goes on the defensive. The jellyfish on her head shows that she wants to appear stupid so she can feel less pressure from others. The eyes are big and sad, that she wants to be pitied. The octopus tentacles from the mouth are a verbal barrier of tricks and subterfuge. This art is about the masks people wear.
