What if Farcaster is just a really good crypto forum—niche discussions, on-chain identity, solid UX. Basically Hacker News for crypto with a nice app. Maybe that’s all it needs to be. 🤔

I thinka new version of the bitcoin talk forum of 2012, or crypto twitter of 2020 would be a massive success. I don't understand why there's not 5 well-seeded, well-modded crypto channels (crypto news, trading/earning, defi, nfts, crypto x ai). With today's interest in crypto, there could be 100s of top influencers per category, 1000s of occasional contributors and Millions of passive followers who might even trade upon info. Obv that requires work but every crypto project has a niche discord or telegram with community mods and there's plenty of well-run telegram chats with mods. So, I consider this a miss - especially as Farcaster wants to target crypto users.

I think important channels shouldn't be controlled by individuals. For example, the /crypto channel doesn't accept any members, and even though it has a general crypto name, it used to delete posts for any reason.

Moderation is important and posts that break the rules should be deleted. But it feels more fair to let anyone join and only ban people if they actually violate the channel rules.

But sometimes the rules are not appropriate and are more based on the owner's preferences. For example, in the crypto channel, it was stated that the discussion should be only about crypto and no charts should be included. Naturally, when discussing crypto in general, the main aspect of the conversation is always about price and charts.

I get what you want and agree that a public place should be for everyone. However, even public places have some basic rules (based on the country, local community’s preferences) And in our (my) case we want a value-add public, digital room and founders of this room and their communities can set some rules - whether that’s about permissions to write or accepted content. Either you adhere or have to pick another room.

For example, I don't have much to say in the base channel, but one time I wanted to share a related topic, and I saw that I wasn't a member and couldn't post, and I couldn't find a way to join. And it's interesting that you check the casts in this channel, 90% of the content is not special. So why were they able to join the channel and just say a daily "gm", but when I wanted to cast something relevant, I couldn't?

That’s prob because they were active in that channel before the farcaster team broke channels last year. Ever since I haven’t joined many new channels either because it was too complicated, no info available. (Big mistake imo which could be fixed pretty easily but is no priority according to @dwr.eth)

Certainly, no one denies that channels should have rules. But a large part of these rules is based on personal preferences. Furthermore, for some channels, there is no entry point for people, and the channel owner is not even mentioned in the bio, so we can't at least ask them to send us an invite. And of course, I should also mention that, for example, I had been a member of the base channel for a long time, and after these new conditions, I hadn't casted anything and didn't know that I wasn't a member. It was strange to me why they didn't make me a member, but many people who are tagged as spam are saying 'gm' there every day, and nothing happens to them."
