genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs? disclaimer: with or without you is a good song

they were a big deal at precisely the right time in the 80s and 90s -- MTV's rise, peak record label power -- that allowed them to build a massive global audience; but, pop culture has moved beyond them since that iTunes release, which annoyed a lot of people.
