Not sure about 529 specifically… might still be too early for 529 plans to adopt. 

Could do an ESA instead. Can be self-directed and has a lot more flexibility with investments. There are contribution/income limits though but might be worth looking into

doesn't work for us, contribution limit is too small ($2k / year) and has an income limit unfortunately
