Do people actually consciously make a judgement about quality of service when they tip??!

I always just mindlessly add 15-20%. So the whole "tipping incentivizes quality of service" argument has always seemed unrealistic to me.

Most of my European friends make a conscious judgment, me included.nnBut in the US (I guess Canada, too), tipping seems like a social norm. I never felt embarrassed for not tipping in Europe, but in the US, I feel always uneasy when I pick 0%.
