I was originally going to do my most overrated shows, but Kenny sufficiently cajoled me and I figure I'll rip those soon enough so give the people what they paid for.

These aren't the best 5 shows of the 2000s, but my favorite 5.

#5 The Office

Greg Daniels solved sitcoms. 

Unfortunately, Michael Schur tried to hug his nuts forever after, but couldn't come close to Daniels who tries to carry the spirit of every middle American since King of the Hill.

Also, the entire thing lasts maybe 3 episodes without Steve Carell.


#3 The Wire

Listen to Andre Royo talk about winning a "ghetto Emmy" and understand even though I hate journalist/worm David Simon, the authenticity from Ed Burns and the cast (some pulled from Baltimore's streets) make this a must-watch.



The next two might not be the "best shows" but are personal favorites.

A person coming from nothing into a world they don't know and surviving only by their wits-- the story of the underdog-- is a very American story and understandably not for everyone, but it resonates deeply with me. 

#2 The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air

No, Fresh Prince isn't from the 2000s but it informs many shows that came after. I don't think Tony Soprano talks about gabbagool without Uncle Phil wearing a dashiki. A lot of this generation, raised by single mothers, are spoken to in "that Dad episode."

#1 Mad Men

I've probably watched every episode of Mad Men 100+ times, some more than others. It's nice to watch something where everyone making it gave a fuck and you can tell. 

There's also some personal lore that boosts this, if we ever get a drink together I'll probably tell you. 


#4 The Knick 

Depicting real people trying is a common theme here, and important to me in storytelling. The Knick does that, painting a fucked up portrait of life a century ago. Every day was wrought with fear and chaos.

The Knick does the integral duty of art which is reminding us we're more alike than different.
