The best way to save time is to make sure you know *exactly* what you're looking for. Make sure your internal requirements are nailed -- especially, what *must* this person be an expert in, and get absolutely right? Everything else is a nice-to-have.

That trial period is so important. The cost of keeping on someone who is not a good fit is so much greater in the long run than the time invested into hiring.
