Really interesting. Living in Europe we always see the jury as something weird in the court system.

Not necessarily me, but more the facts there’s an additional layer. With a jury, there is this extra layer on top. I’m also curious whether a citizen can refuse to sit on a jury, and how do you ensure that the jury always reflects society? We don’t have this in Europe.

Depends on the jurisdiction, but Citizens usually get one β€œfree” pass to skip jury duty but then are legally obligated to sit for the one after they pass on. Jury is randomly (dunno algorithm) from all taxpayers in a jurisdiction so peers are geographic peers

Really special. But a jury is only for complex cases, right? And how long does jury duty last? What if it takes weeks? My knowledge of juries doesn’t go beyond the movie β€˜12 Angry Men’ 🀣
