Lucky’s Boy This is a portrait of Luckson Nkhomani, a Malawian immigrant who introduces himself as Lucky, and his son Daniel. I’ve had the privilege of photographing Lucky on several occasions, and in late 2020, I created this portrait for my ongoing You Are My Father series. When I asked Lucky why he chose the name Daniel for his newborn son, he shared a story that stayed with me. A few years ago, he met a European man named Daniel who was a guest at the property where Lucky works as a gardener. This Daniel, as Lucky put it, was “a nice white man” who treated him with kindness and respect, making him feel like an equal. Hearing this brought tears to my eyes. Growing up in Europe, I took such treatment for granted—never thinking of it as something rare or extraordinary. For Lucky, though, it was deeply meaningful. Lucky hopes his son will grow up in a world where equality is the norm, where the color of your skin or your economic background doesn’t define how you’re treated. 2020 | SA

What a powerful story behind this beautiful portrait. It’s a reminder of the impact kindness and respect can have, even in the smallest interactions. Wishing Lucky and Daniel a future filled with equality and opportunity 🤍
