Can the scientific worldview provide a complete understanding of the human experience?

The scientific view can help us with the “means” but not the “ends”. Any stance on ethics can only be bolstered by science, but such a stance must grow from a philosophical root.

How do you think most scientists choose ethical positions? Do you think it's a conscious, deliberate choice?

That's a great question. I guess those that study philosophy consciously will make more conscious decisions. I think the key to this is actively choosing between opposing stances. Trouble is that most of the population adopts a standpoint subconsciously, through diffusion in the environment. Scientists included.
