"Otaku" is a Japanese word that usually describes someone who is extremely passionate about a hobby, especially anime, manga, or video games. In Japan, it can sometimes have a negative meaning, suggesting someone who is a little too obsessed and socially withdrawn. Outside Japan, like in the U.S. or other countries, "otaku" is more often just used in a positive or neutral way for people who really love anime and Japanese pop culture.
