This is the second time today i've been told to consider running a node for better understanding of the tech. 
What's the hardware spec to be able to run a node?

Nothing wild. Buying a recent raspberry pi (or equivalent) with 16gb ram + a decent SSD (this is the more expensive component but worth it for sync speed) is all you need really
