I’d love to understand why adding media (mainly pictures) to an ERC-20 is so complicated.

With media becoming increasingly tied to coins (Clanker, Zora) — and more and more coins being created — this complexity creates significant friction for builders.

Circles 2.0 uses 1155 tokens.
Once you realize the possibilities—that you can just send tokens to an address, and the address can then "do stuff," and you can even add a message to this, "and the address can do context-dependent stuff dependent on sender and message"—you never want to go back to ERC20!

Well, 1155 definitely has the metadata pointers built in, but there's no concept of decimals, so swapping between them might be weird, since you can only deal in whole numbers.
