This article by @nateliason is really good but there’s something missing. It skips over how hard it is to build either type of business. Having tried to build both types, I couldn’t imagine building one just to help fund the build out of the other.

Oh I disagree, finding a couple freelancing or consulting projects to cover your bills is probably 1/10 the difficulty of launching an app that pays your bills

Oh yeah, I didn’t take cash business to mean only freelance. I took it to mean basically any business that is not likely to be an equity business, meaning no big exit. Most lifestyle businesses fall into this category
