Yeah well put. And since anyone can make a client you could have different look and feels available to people depending on the vibe / focus they want

1. FB when started had the same vibes, same style. 
2. Instagram (story updates)
3. Discord - channels+DCs 

I think of it like this, the best features of Web2 social apps exist here.
