I’m on a caffeine tolerance reset (10 days no caffeine) and am always surprised by how sleepy I am when I get off caffeine Some clarifications here is that sleepy is not the same as tired Tired is a subjective feeling, sleepy is the physiological drive for sleep Sleepiness is driven by a factor of urge to sleep (adenosine) and sleep debt (how many hours behind on sleep you are) I’m surprised at the sleepiness because I know I don’t have any sleep debt yet coming off the caffeine I pretty much need an hour nap around mid-day So I’ve got a theory that consistent caffeine use can fry your adenosine receptors not only just making you tired but actually forces you to need more sleep in the days it takes them to re-acclimatize Which is crazy because that would mean the more you abuse caffeine the more sleep you need when you stop - entrenching the negative feedback cycle of using it One reason I do these resets cause they’re so important to holistic health and wellness
