I love and appreciate the replies here! My take: I think this is a good step forward, but I wonder about the user and mod experience. If you're a new user, you sign up, find a channel you like and then wait for your membership to be accepted... until then, are you just posting to the timeline, channel'less? If you're a mod or owner (esp. of a massive channel), this feels like it could quickly become a ton of work + How do you know if they're good or bad? I dunno, just some thoughts...

Yep - this is my concern too. I get why they're doing it - I've been kinda blown away by how many bots there are in the ecosystem - but how is it going to work for new users? I'm a new user - trying to find my on the platform - I know the rules - pick a channel or two and contribute - don't spam - add what you think is interesting content - reply interact etc. With the change - the only way to demonstrate good intent is to reply - along with all the bots - which then gets lost below the line. So doesn't do my visibility any good. The reciprocal nature of the social dynamic - I contribute - you magnify - we all win - gets lost. With that said - I'm all for trying shit out - maybe it'll work great - in the meantime - I hope I get an invite to /music
