On one hand I’m grateful for the idea of rewarded activity on a social platform. It’s shown either way at this point we’ll use them whether they’re paying us or not… Yet I also feel like basing rewards on sliding-scale activity, leads to an inundation of attention farming & ‘whatever-posts’ that don’t exactly inspire meaningful engagement, nor a display of creativity, an inquiry of progressive community discussion, etc. This thought it what has caused me to cast doubt on the sincerity of things sometimes. It has happened even before here though. I had been on Threads a reasonable amount, and ever since people started showing that they were getting paid from posting on there, it wildly accelerated the amount of fluff posts & worse, stolen/copied posts. There’d be so much attention farmed by someone who simply copy & pasted someone else’s message. That feels so dead & dry to me. And sadly I’ve begun having doubts looming overhead here as welll. I hope we can course correct.

You can’t build a real community by paying people to participate. It doesn’t scale, and instead of genuine conversations, you get users putting on a show and some really strange social dynamics. But here we are, the experiment is live, so let’s see what we can learn from it
